Commentary -
India rarely have had a good day on this tour. Today was one such day when everything turned into gold. They will now move on to Adelaide where they take on the hosts on Sunday. Before that, we have Sri Lanka taking on Australia here on Friday. Join us for all the action starting at 12:20 PM local time (9:50 IST). For now, cheers and bye..
Dhoni: It is always nice to speak after a win. Praveen had an off-day and Ashwin had to do the hard work. I am happy with the way he bowled. We wanted to improve in some areas and I am happy that we did so. We need to put in a better performance going further. The cramps will be an issue in many venues here, we need to adjust to the hot conditions. The batsmen need to make runs while the bowlers need to take wickets. We need to do things that are in our control and that will help us in future.
Ashwin : We were keen to get points on the table. There was some spin and bounce from the wicket and I enjoyed bowling on this surface. I want to contribute to the team's cause and I am happy to do so today. We needed to have a cool head and I told Jadeja just that. He batted very sensibly and that rubbed off in our partnership.
Ashwin is the MoM for his all-round efforts. He took 3/32 and then chipped in with an unbeaten 30.
Mahela: We did not have any momentum going through our innings. We lost wickets at the wrong time. We should have got 250-260 on this surface. We did not play the spinners well, we needed to rotate the strike. We took wickets, but we were not good enough to close the match. We will have a good talk and will look to do better against Australia on Friday
Sri Lanka will rue about the absence of a regular spinner. There was lack of variety in their bowling which eventually cost them this match. They have very little time to recover with their next match at the same ground on Friday against Australia
Ashwin had a big smile on his face, so did the Indian camp. It would not have been had India contrived to lose this match. Sehwag threw his wicket away, Sachin and Kohli looked very assured before Mathews burst through Sachin's defences. The middle-order were guilty of throwing their wickets away before a calamitous run-out of Kohli left Jadeja and Ashwin to get the remaining 53 runs. The two batted in a calm manner, slowly but surely taking the match away from Sri lanka.
46.4 Mathews to Ashwin, 1 run, A comical finish to the match. Ashwin looks to go over the top, ends up horribly mistiming the lofted drive, the ball was in the air for a lot of time. Thirimanne converges from cover, Malinga comes in from mid-off. They both leave it to the other to complete the catch. The ball drops right in the middle of the two, Ashwin completes the run and India have their first points of the tournament
46.3 Mathews to Ashwin, FOUR, scores are tied. Another short delivery outside off, Ashwin comes on the frontfoot and pulls it in the air over mid-on. A couple of bounces and the ball races away to the fence
46.2 Mathews to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, Mathews drifts this one on the pads, tucked wide of mid-wicket for a single
46.1 Mathews to Ravindra Jadeja, no run, length delivery that spat up on a surprised Jadeja, he gets back in defence
Angelo Mathews [9.0-1-25-2] is back into the attack
45.6 Dhammika to Ashwin, FOUR, Magnificent. Ashwin picks up the length of this delivery very quickly, rocks back and pulls it in front of mid-wicket for a boundary. Emphatic shot from Ashwin
45.5 Dhammika to Ashwin, no run, Ashwin punches a good length delivery towards mid-off
45.4 Dhammika to Ashwin, no run, good length delivery on the stumps, driven to mid-on
45.3 Dhammika to Ashwin, no run, fuller and just outside off, Ashwin presents the full face of the bat and drives it back to the bowler
45.2 Dhammika to Ashwin, no run, good length delivery outside off, Ashwin stays back in defence
RJ seems to have done some damage to his bat
45.1 Dhammika to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, RJ wants to finish this one quickly, charges down the track and drives it to sweeper cover for a single
44.6 Malinga to Ashwin, FOUR, Lovely shot. This was full and overpitched outside off, Ashwin leans forward, gets to the pitch of the ball and caresses it in the gap between cover and mid-off. The fielder gives chase but in vain. Super shot from Ashwin
44.5 Malinga to Ashwin, no run, short bouncer outside off, Ashwin drops his wrists and lets it go
44.4 Malinga to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, full and honing towards the leg-stump, flicked away towards mid-wicket for a single
44.3 Malinga to Ravindra Jadeja, no run, full and on the stumps, Ravindra Jadeja defends it towards point
44.2 Malinga to Ashwin, 1 run, fuller length delivery that shapes back in, clipped away in front of mid-wicket for a single
44.1 Malinga to Ashwin, no run, slower short delivery outside off, Ashwin guides it towards point
