Well, it has been a wonderful performance by the Australians. They will look to extend their advantage in Adelaide for the 2nd ODI which begins on 7th at Adelaide. Do join us for the ball by ball coverage. Until then, this is Siddharth signing off. See you next time. Bye
Shane Watson has been declared the Man of the Match for his fine all round performance of 59 and 1/31.
A comprehensive win for Australia. They win the first ODI by 113 runs and go 1-0 in the series. West Indies may have been a little over confident about their chances in this ODI. The Aussie bowlers rattled their top order with quick wickets, with Bollinger and Harris picking up quick wickets to put the Windies on the back foot. Hauritz and Watson maintained the pressure on the Windies and no easy runs were scored. It was a collective effort from the Aussies, with both bowlers and batsmen contributing to the cause. Who will be the Man of the Match? Stay tuned...

Australia end up on 256/8. West Indies, for most part of the match, tied the Aussies down. Roach, Rampaul and Pollard tied the Aussies down with some clever bowling. All of them used clever changes in pace and length to trouble the batsman. Australia rallied around individual contributions from Watson, Ponting and Hussey. Some big hitting from Johnson pushed the total beyond 250. Can Australia defend this total? West Indies will rely on Gayle to give them a flying start and put the Aussies under pressure. Hello and welcome to the coverage of the 1st ODI between West Indies and Australia at the MCG.
by Siddhartha Vishwanathan
After clean sweeping Pakistan in all three formats, Australia turn their attention to the West Indies, who return after playing a three test series in November-December. West Indies will look to do one better than Pakistan, while Australia would want to maintain the winning momentum.
TEAM NEWS WEST INDIES
West Indies are a young and confident side. Under Chris Gayle, the team looks capable of challenging the Australians. However, they have been plagued by injuries, and thus Gayle will lead a relatively inexperienced team in the series. The loss of Dwayne Bravo could not have come at a worse time for the West Indies, who are without Chanderpaul and Sarwan.
In their absence, the batting responsibility falls almost entirely on Gayle. The other man to watch out for would be Kieron Pollard in the lower middle order. His exploits have been marvelous in T-20 cricket, but it remains to be seen if he can replicate his form in ODIs.
The bowling is weakened without Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards, but in Kemar Roach they have a fiery bowler who can trouble the Aussies on tracks which are responsive to fast bowling. Ravi Rampaul can also cause problems with his accuracy.

TEAM NEWS AUSTRALIA
Australia are yet to be defeated this summer. They easily sailed through what was expected to be a tough test against Pakistan, but they know that the Windies cannot be taken lightly. The batting is absolutely solid with Watson, White and Michael Hussey forming the backbone. Ricky Ponting may be concerned about his own form, but he needs only one good knock to get back amongst the runs.
The bowling has been bolstered with the arrival of Ryan Harris. He was the star against Pakistan, ending the series with 13 wickets, including two consecutive five wicket hauls. He would look to continue his good spell against the Windies. Bollinger, Johnson, McKay and Hauritz give this team the required firepower to defeat any opposition on any given day.

"It's an inexperienced team at this point in time but at the same time it's a lovely opportunity for the guys to step up against Australia and make a name for themselves and then look forward to their career" - Chris Gayle, commenting on the team's chances.
"He's a very dangerous one-day player. He had a good Test series against us here as well and scored quickly. One thing we did just touch on then with our team meeting was making sure that our plans to him are spot on" - Ricky Ponting, on how he plans to counter the Gayle effect.
